Viking Dishwasher Not Draining: Water at the End of a Cycle

Water visible after an interrupted wash is different from a full tub remaining after a completed cycle. Record when you noticed it and whether the machine displayed a message. Stop repeated cycles if water is rising or leaking, and avoid putting a hand into a filter opening where broken glass may be present.

Requests accepted 24/7. Technician visits are by appointment and subject to availability; overnight visits are not guaranteed.

A simple observation diagram

Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.

  1. Confirm whether the cycle actually ended
  2. Record the water level and message
  3. Review owner-accessible filter care
  4. Request service for repeated standing water

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop a leaking machine and avoid contact with wet electrical equipment. If safe and accessible, use the normal supply shutoff for an active water leak. Do not reach into a pump, bypass the door latch or repeatedly restart a faulting machine.

Separate the end-of-cycle complaint from an interruption

Note whether the dishwasher was canceled, lost power or stopped with an alert. A small amount in a recessed filter area may need a different interpretation from water covering the tub floor; check the exact manual. Do not repeatedly add a new wash cycle to force drainage. If a normal cancel-and-drain instruction exists, follow it only as directed and stop if the water level or leak worsens.

Look at the connected sink situation

Mention a slow sink drain, recent disposer replacement or plumbing work. These are useful clues about the installation, but do not disconnect a hose or remove a dishwasher to inspect hidden plumbing. Check only accessible owner-maintenance items identified in the guide. Wear appropriate protection when handling a removable filter, and do not reach below it into a pump or concealed passage.

Describe what happens when draining should occur

Report silence, a new hum or an intermittent sound without using the sound alone to diagnose the pump. A technician may need to assess blockage, installation, sensing and electrical operation. Drain cleaner is not a dishwasher repair method and can create additional damage or hazards. Ask which findings support replacing a pump rather than simply assuming standing water proves motor failure.

Find the right manual and diagram

The correct manual’s filter and lower-rack drawings identify owner-maintenance parts. Its installation drainage illustration can help discuss a hose-routing concern with a professional; it is not an instruction to pull the appliance out or change plumbing.

VDWU324 official product page and manual downloads

The VDWU324 page is a documentation example, not a universal dishwasher manual. Match your complete FDWU or VDWU model before using filter, rack, control or installation illustrations.

For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom

Does standing water always mean the drain pump failed?

No. Cycle interruption, blockage, installation and other conditions can produce a similar complaint. The water level and timing matter.

Can I pour drain cleaner into the tub?

No. Use only cleaning products and procedures approved for the dishwasher. Arrange assessment for persistent drainage problems.

Prepare a useful service request

Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
