Viking Dishwasher Not Starting or Responding
A dishwasher that is completely dark is a different complaint from one that accepts a program but never begins. A beep, flashing light or displayed delay can provide useful context. Record the control response before trying repeated resets or pushing harder on the door.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Identify dark versus responsive controls
- Check normal lock and delay settings
- Confirm unobstructed door closure
- Arrange service for a recurring failure to start
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop a leaking machine and avoid contact with wet electrical equipment. If safe and accessible, use the normal supply shutoff for an active water leak. Do not reach into a pump, bypass the door latch or repeatedly restart a faulting machine.
Follow the control sequence for the exact model
Top-control and front-control dishwashers may use different start sequences. Review the owner instructions, including any required close-door step, rather than applying another brand’s timing. Check a normal control lock or delayed-start setting if the panel responds. Photograph the message or flashing pattern without guessing that it has the same meaning as a code on another series.
Look for an ordinary closing obstruction
Check that a protruding utensil or incorrectly seated rack is not preventing closure. Close the door normally; do not slam it, lean on it or bypass the latch. A click at the door does not prove that all sensing and control conditions are satisfied. Mention recent cabinet work or panel installation if alignment changed before the starting problem.
Stop cycling power as a substitute for diagnosis
If the unit is dark, report whether there was a power interruption or breaker trip. Do not touch a wet plug or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker. When a manufacturer-directed reset briefly restores operation, record the recurrence. Supply, door sensing, controls and other conditions may need testing. Ask what findings explain the failure before approving a latch or control replacement.
Find the right manual and diagram
The matching control-panel drawing clarifies program, start, delay and lock controls. A door-latch parts diagram is useful for identification after diagnosis, not for finding a way to defeat the safety interlock.
VDWU324 official product page and manual downloads
The VDWU324 page is a documentation example, not a universal dishwasher manual. Match your complete FDWU or VDWU model before using filter, rack, control or installation illustrations.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Can I hold the latch switch to make it run?
No. The door interlock is a safety feature. Do not bypass it or operate the dishwasher with the door unsecured.
It beeps when I press Start. Does that prove a bad board?
No. A beep may communicate a setting, door condition or another issue. Record the exact sequence and consult the model guide.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
