Viking Electric Range Burner Not Heating
Before describing a burner as dead, identify whether the Viking surface is radiant electric or induction. A zone that heats beneath glass and an induction zone that needs compatible cookware do not behave the same way. Record the complete model and the exact control response.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Identify radiant or induction cooking
- Check the selected zone and normal controls
- Compare one zone with the entire appliance
- Stop for cracked glass or electrical warning signs
When to stop troubleshooting
If you smell gas, leave the area without operating switches or appliances and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not keep trying to ignite a burner. Wiring, valves, gas-pressure adjustments and appliance movement belong to qualified service.
Verify the cooking mode you are observing
Check the owner guide for the selected zone, size option and any control lock. Avoid touching the surface to test for heat: it may remain hot even when a visible element is no longer glowing. Note whether an indicator responds, a setting appears and the other zones work during ordinary use. A display that lights up does not prove the heating circuit is functioning.
Distinguish normal cycling from failure
Some electric heating behavior includes cycling, so the absence of a continuous glow is not by itself a failed-element diagnosis. Describe the actual cooking result and whether the zone ever warms. If cookware has changed, note its size and whether the base sits normally. Do not use an empty pan on a high setting as a stress test or repeatedly operate a suspect zone.
Avoid panel removal and repeated power resets
A heating fault can involve the element, controls, connections or supply. These require appropriate testing. If a breaker trips, do not repeatedly reset it to complete a meal. Cracked glass, sparking or a burning electrical smell calls for stopping use. Share whether the oven also lost heat, because a broader appliance symptom may change the diagnostic approach.
Find the right manual and diagram
Choose the electric or induction manual from the official library; the linked VGIC gas drawing is only a comparison of range layouts and does not describe your electric elements. The zone map in the correct manual identifies control-to-burner relationships.
Viking documentation library — select your electric, induction or control model
Choose the exact appliance and fuel type in the official library before using its control, zone or parts illustrations. Gas burner drawings do not apply to an electric or induction heating system.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
The element is not glowing constantly. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Describe whether the cooking zone actually heats and follow the operation guide for its normal cycling behavior.
Can I test the element with the glass lifted?
No. Opening the cooktop and electrical testing are service tasks. Keep owner checks to normal controls and visible condition.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
