Viking Induction Range Not Detecting a Pan
A pan-detection message can be a useful starting point, but it is not automatically a failed induction module. The cookware, zone selection and appliance controls all matter. Begin with the cookware requirements in the exact Viking manual and describe the message without translating it into a guessed fault code.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Record the exact display message
- Confirm induction-compatible cookware
- Check pan position and the chosen zone
- Seek service if a known suitable pan is still rejected
When to stop troubleshooting
If you smell gas, leave the area without operating switches or appliances and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not keep trying to ignite a burner. Wiring, valves, gas-pressure adjustments and appliance movement belong to qualified service.
Check the cookware information
Use cookware identified by its manufacturer as suitable for induction and compare its base size with the Viking requirements. A magnetic response can be a clue about the base, but it does not verify every size and construction requirement. Warped or poorly centered cookware can complicate the observation. Do not buy a replacement control board simply because one unusual pan is not recognized.
Make a controlled comparison during normal use
If it is safe and the surface is undamaged, note whether a known compatible pan works on another zone and whether the affected zone rejects more than one suitable pan. Keep the comparison within the normal operating instructions. Do not run an empty pan on high, use improvised adapter materials or bridge controls. A brief written record is enough; repeated fault recreation is unnecessary.
Include the broader electrical symptoms
Report whether the controls are locked, the entire surface is unresponsive or only one zone shows the message. Mention a recent power interruption and any recurring error after normal startup. Internal cooling, sensing and power electronics need professional assessment. If the glass is cracked, liquid entered a damaged surface or the breaker trips, stop use rather than continuing cookware tests.
Find the right manual and diagram
Use the correct induction manual for its zone map, cookware-size guidance and display symbols. The gas-range example is not applicable to induction operation. A parts drawing can identify the assembly after diagnosis but cannot establish whether the pan or electronics caused the complaint.
Viking documentation library — select your electric, induction or control model
Choose the exact appliance and fuel type in the official library before using its control, zone or parts illustrations. Gas burner drawings do not apply to an electric or induction heating system.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Will every stainless-steel pan work?
No. Stainless cookware varies. Check the cookware maker’s induction marking and the appliance’s base-size requirements.
Does a pan symbol mean the appliance has no power?
Not necessarily. Record the exact symbol and the selected zone; the control may be communicating a cookware or operating condition.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
