Viking Range Burner Not Lighting: Safe Observations
A burner that clicks without lighting, a burner that stays silent and a whole cooktop that will not ignite are different complaints. Stop repeated attempts and record the behavior you already observed. Gas odor changes the priority from appliance troubleshooting to leaving the area and contacting emergency help.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Gas odor? Leave and call from outside
- No odor: turn the affected control off
- Note one burner versus all burners
- Check only cool, owner-removable parts
When to stop troubleshooting
If you smell gas, leave the area without operating switches or appliances and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not keep trying to ignite a burner. Wiring, valves, gas-pressure adjustments and appliance movement belong to qualified service.
Describe the unsuccessful start precisely
Tell the technician which burner is affected and whether there was clicking, a brief flame or no response. Do not deliberately release gas to confirm that supply is present. A normal flame at another burner does not prove the affected valve and ignition system are sound. If several burners failed at once, include recent power, cleaning or installation events.
Consider the timing after cleaning
When the surface is fully cool and controls are off, compare removable burner pieces with the exact owner-manual illustration. Some assemblies can be misplaced after cleaning, but open and sealed designs are not interchangeable. Follow the approved drying and reassembly instructions only for parts intended to be removed by the owner. Do not enlarge ports with a tool, bend an electrode or use a match as a diagnostic shortcut.
Keep ignition service separate from gas adjustment
Persistent ignition failure can require checks of electrical ignition, component placement and the gas system. Those checks should be performed using the proper procedures. Do not turn concealed adjustment screws or change an orifice based on an online video. Share the model, fuel type if known and whether this is a range, rangetop or separate cooktop before parts are selected.
Find the right manual and diagram
The VGIC feature drawing is an example of an open-burner arrangement. Select the exact manual to identify owner-removable pieces; do not apply its assembly details to a sealed burner or use the drawing as a gas-conversion guide.
VGIC open-burner range manual: feature drawings
The illustrated example covers VGIC5302, VGIC5362 and VGIC5482 open-burner ranges. Sealed-burner, dual-fuel, electric and induction products have different instructions.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Should I keep the knob at ignite until it works?
No. Repeated unsuccessful ignition is not a useful test and can create a hazard. Turn it off and follow the appliance and gas-safety instructions.
Can a wet burner explain a problem after cleaning?
Moisture or placement can be relevant, but that timing does not prove the cause. Follow the model-specific care instructions and arrange service if the fault remains.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
