The dishwasher finishes but leaves gritty food residue

Compare the result across the load. Is residue concentrated on the upper rack, inside tall glasses or across every item? Photograph the original arrangement before unloading. Note whether the dishwasher completed its program normally or whether the load was removed after an interruption. A finished-looking display and a clean result are separate observations.

With the machine off and cool, follow your model manual for any accessible filter cleaning and reinstall parts correctly. Do not reach blindly into the sump, remove pump covers without the correct procedure or run the machine with a filter missing.

Review whether a tall utensil or dish could interfere with the spray path and whether large food scraps entered the load. Report the detergent and program used, but avoid mixing products or adding hand dish soap. If a familiar loading pattern now consistently washes poorly, a technician can investigate water circulation, heating and other model-specific factors.

• Separate gritty particles from chalky deposits or a film on glassware.
• Record which rack is most affected and whether the same items were previously cleaned well.
• Note any new grinding sound, remaining water or warning message.
