Viking Dishwasher Making Grinding, Humming or Knocking Noises

A regular knock during washing, a hum during draining and a new grinding sound are different observations. Record when the sound occurs and whether washing or drainage has changed. Stop operation if the sound is harsh, water leaks or there are electrical warning signs.

A simple observation diagram

Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.

  1. Identify wash, drain or fill timing
  2. Check utensil and spray-arm clearance while stopped
  3. Record any cleaning or drainage change
  4. Leave pump access and internal testing for service

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop a leaking machine and avoid contact with wet electrical equipment. If safe and accessible, use the normal supply shutoff for an active water leak. Do not reach into a pump, bypass the door latch or repeatedly restart a faulting machine.

Relate the sound to a cycle stage

Use the display and normal operating sequence to describe when the noise begins, rather than repeatedly opening the machine. A brief recording from a dry safe position can help. Mention whether the noise is new or has been present since installation. If it follows plumbing or disposer work, include that history without assuming the appliance itself is necessarily the source.

Check for ordinary loading contact

With the dishwasher stopped and safe to handle, look for a tall utensil or hanging handle in the path of an accessible spray arm. Follow the manual’s owner check and do not force the arm through an obstruction. Check that racks and removable baskets are seated normally. Do not reach into a filter opening or pump to search for debris; broken glass and concealed components can cause injury.

Separate a nuisance rattle from an operating fault

Report standing water, poor cleaning, interrupted cycles and messages alongside the noise. A hum does not prove that a motor is healthy or failed, and a grind does not identify which assembly needs replacement. The technician should evaluate the relevant wash or drain function and installation conditions. Avoid repeated empty cycles intended to flush out an unknown object.

Find the right manual and diagram

Use the rack, spray-arm and filter illustrations to identify accessible parts and the area of the sound. A pump exploded view helps discuss a diagnosed repair; it does not make the pump an owner-accessible maintenance item.

VDWU324 official product page and manual downloads

The VDWU324 page is a documentation example, not a universal dishwasher manual. Match your complete FDWU or VDWU model before using filter, rack, control or installation illustrations.

For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom

Can I reach below the filter to remove something rattling?

No. Do not reach into concealed pump passages. Follow only the manual’s owner-accessible filter care and leave hidden debris for service.

Does a humming sound mean the pump is working?

Not necessarily. Describe whether water actually drains or dishes are washed normally; sound alone is not a complete performance test.

Prepare a useful service request

Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
