Viking Dishwasher Detergent Not Dissolving
A dry tablet still behind the dispenser lid is different from wet detergent lying in the tub. Record which condition you see and whether the cycle completed. The dispenser may be involved, but poor water delivery or an interrupted wash can leave a similar result.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Check whether the cycle completed
- Identify dry, wet or partly dissolved detergent
- Review dispenser clearance and product instructions
- Seek service for repeated residue with normal loading
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop a leaking machine and avoid contact with wet electrical equipment. If safe and accessible, use the normal supply shutoff for an active water leak. Do not reach into a pump, bypass the door latch or repeatedly restart a faulting machine.
Describe the remaining detergent accurately
Note whether the lid is open or closed and where the residue sits. Check the detergent packaging for storage and usage guidance; moisture-damaged products can behave differently. Use only dishwasher detergent in the recommended form and amount. Do not add a second dose and restart repeatedly, since excess product can create another cleaning or foaming problem.
Give the dispenser room to open
Compare the rack-loading guide with the position of large plates, cutting boards and utensils near the door. An item can interfere with dispenser movement even when the dishwasher door closes. Check normal loading with the machine stopped and safe to handle. Do not pry the dispenser lid, force its spring or remove the assembly to test it.
Connect residue to the whole wash result
Tell the technician whether dishes are dirty, the wash sounds unusual, the machine fails to fill or a message appears before the cycle finishes. Detergent left behind is not a direct measurement of water temperature or circulation. Assessment should distinguish a dispenser fault from a wider operating issue. Ask what evidence supports the proposed repair and whether the selected detergent and cycle are appropriate for this model.
Find the right manual and diagram
The detergent-dispenser and rack drawings show the intended loading clearance and compartment arrangement. Use the exact model illustration, since dispenser designs and dosing guidance can differ across Viking generations.

The VDWU324 page is a documentation example, not a universal dishwasher manual. Match your complete FDWU or VDWU model before using filter, rack, control or installation illustrations.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Should I put the tablet directly on the tub floor?
Follow the detergent and appliance instructions rather than using an improvised workaround. Placement can change when detergent is released during the cycle.
Does an unopened lid prove the dispenser motor failed?
No. An obstruction, incomplete cycle or control condition may be involved. Report the lid position together with the rest of the wash behavior.
Prepare a useful service request
