Viking Oven Broil Not Working but Bake Still Works
Bake and broil are distinct cooking functions, so one working does not prove the other is healthy. Confirm the correct cavity and broil selection in the owner manual. Avoid looking into a hot cavity at close range or treating a glowing component as a complete diagnostic test.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Confirm the broil mode and cavity
- Follow the model-specific door-position instruction
- Record heat and control behavior already observed
- Stop repeated tests and arrange assessment
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop using an oven that sparks, smells of burning wiring or has damaged glass. Let it cool before inspecting accessible surfaces. Never defeat a door lock or remove a heating element for a test. If there is a gas odor, leave the area and call the utility or emergency services from outside.
Review the normal broiling setup
Use the rack and pan arrangement recommended for the exact oven. Door-position instructions can differ; do not copy advice from another brand or generation. Keep grease and combustible materials away from a suspected heating fault. If the appliance does not respond normally, cancel the operation rather than leaving food under an inactive or erratic broiler.
Explain whether bake still behaves normally
Report the most recent successful use of bake, not just whether the oven light or fan comes on. Note whether broil remains cold, heats intermittently or triggers a message. On a double oven, identify the upper or lower cavity. An electric broiler and a gas infrared broiler require different assessment, so include the full model and fuel information.
Leave internal testing to service
A failed broil function can involve the heat source, its control path, wiring or another operating condition. Do not remove the upper element, reach near an igniter or bridge a switch to reproduce the fault. Ask the technician to explain which tests support the diagnosis and whether the appliance can be used safely in any remaining mode before repair.
Find the right manual and diagram
The cavity feature drawing helps locate the broiling area and identify the correct oven in a double unit. For a gas range, select its fuel-specific drawing rather than the linked built-in electric-oven example.
5 and 7 Series electric oven manual: features and controls
This example covers listed VSOE, VDOE, VSOF7301 and VDOF7301 built-in electric ovens. A range oven, gas oven or a different generation can use different controls and parts.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Can I keep using bake while waiting?
Do not assume that another mode is safe when the cause is unknown. Describe any gas, electrical or control warning and ask for guidance based on the actual fault.
If the broiler does not glow, is it definitely broken?
No. Designs and control sequences vary. The visible appearance alone is not a complete check of operation or supply.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
