Viking Range Burners Work but the Oven Does Not Heat
A working cooktop does not prove that the oven has everything it needs to heat. This is especially important when a range combines gas surface cooking with an electric oven. Identify the model and fuel arrangement before treating the symptom as a failed igniter or heating element.

A simple observation diagram
Read from step 1 to step 4. This is a guide to the next conversation, not a diagnosis or a repair procedure.
- Identify the oven fuel and model
- Confirm the intended cooking mode
- Record bake, broil and display behavior already observed
- Arrange oven-specific diagnosis
When to stop troubleshooting
If you smell gas, leave the area without operating switches or appliances and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not keep trying to ignite a burner. Wiring, valves, gas-pressure adjustments and appliance movement belong to qualified service.
Confirm the selected function
Check that a cooking mode and temperature have been selected according to the owner guide, rather than only setting a timer. Note delay-start or lock indications if present. Do not try unfamiliar key combinations to cancel a condition. A clock or fan running is not evidence that the oven is reaching temperature. Describe the actual result and any displayed message.
Use the surface-to-oven comparison carefully
Tell the technician which burners work during normal use, but do not repeatedly light them to prove gas supply. The oven may have separate operating requirements, and dual-fuel equipment needs the correct electrical supply for oven heating. Electrical measurements, gas ignition checks and concealed connections are service tasks. Do not move a heavy range out of its anti-tip arrangement to look behind it.
Differentiate a cold oven from a slow oven
Record whether the cavity remains entirely cold or warms without reaching the expected cooking condition. Mention whether bake, broil or one oven in a multi-cavity range behaves differently. Do not run repeated heating cycles after a gas odor, failed ignition or electrical warning. Ask for the diagnostic findings that connect the symptom to any proposed component replacement.
Find the right manual and diagram
The range feature drawing shows surface and oven controls as separate functions. Use the matching fuel-specific manual for cooking-mode information; an oven parts drawing should be selected only after the complete range model is known.
VGIC open-burner range manual: feature drawings
The illustrated example covers VGIC5302, VGIC5362 and VGIC5482 open-burner ranges. Sealed-burner, dual-fuel, electric and induction products have different instructions.
For another model, use the official Viking documentation library. Match the full model and document coverage before following an illustration. A numbered callout is not automatically an orderable part number; compatibility must be confirmed for the appliance.

Questions about this symptom
Do working gas burners prove that an electric oven has correct power?
No. Surface gas operation does not verify the electrical supply and components required by a dual-fuel oven.
Can I use the oven if it smells of gas but does not heat?
No. Leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not continue ignition attempts.
Prepare a useful service request
Share the complete model, your city and service address, the symptom timeline and any exact display message. Include a photo or short recording when it can be obtained safely. Keep the appliance accessible without moving it or removing panels. Ask about the diagnostic visit, proposed work and parts availability before approving a repair.
